My young niece is just about to leave high school. I find it difficult to believe she is sixteen years old already and ready to make her mark in the big, wide world outside. She and her family came over for dinner the other evening and, of course, the subject got around to what my niece wanted to do for her career. She expressed great interest in conference management and, seeing how outgoing she is, I thought immediately that conference management would be an excellent career for her. I asked her to tell me all she knew about conference management and what she would hope to expect from such a career. She seemed to have a good grasp of what would be involved and realised that to manage a good conference she would have to be there from the very beginning of the concept of the conference right through until the last delegate had left the venue. She also seemed very excited about the possibility of booking venues and speakers and liaising with a wide range of people on a daily basis. All of these things seem to be an integral part of the career to me and she seems to be realistic as well as excited about the prospect. I have no doubt she will succeed as she is as hardworking as she is motivated.
I recently had a meeting with another company who were organising a conference for around 200 delegates. The representative from the company was very worried about this event because he felt he had sole responsibility for it and was desperately anxious that he might not deliver the goods. Imagine the worry of it. I felt really sorry for him and racked my brains to think of ways he could get some help. Then I thought of conference organisers who could help him plan and execute the conference, ensuring that the day would go smoothly. Conference organisers can often take control of the whole event, right from room booking to speakers, even organising the food and drink element of the day. I discussed this with the company`s representative and he seemed to be really pleased with the news. His only worry was whether his company would allow him to use conference organisers instead of organising the event himself. Nevertheless, he left our office feeling much more confident about the task ahead and determined to persuade his company to allow him to get the help he needed from professionals who were highly trained in organising conferences.
In my long career of event management I have organised the widest range of events you could imagine. From high profile weddings to political conferences; from golf tournaments to dinner dances. This is what makes the career of event management such an exciting one. There are literally never two days the same as each event is unique in its own way.
